SWEET REMEMBRANCES

ROBERT'S (MELODIE'S) SUMMER VACATION

It was the start of summer in 1964 - My mom and my siblings were going to go to West Virginia to visit my grandparents; they were going to gone for a whole week.  I had kept telling my mom that I really didn't want to go.  At 14 years of age, I thought I was old enough to be left alone.  About three days before they were to leave, Ann, a friend of my mother's, agreed that she would check up on me if Mom let me stay home.  Plus she told her that there had been a few burglaries recently in the neighborhood; I think the latter convinced my mom to let me stay.

They left on a Friday night and I was told they would be back the next Friday.  As some of you know, my mom had bought me dresses of my own previously.   The thing is, my sister got much prettier dresses than me - I think I was a little jealous of her.  After they left, I just goofed off for the first couple of days and also did the chores I'd been given to do while they were gone.  On the third day, I was doing the laundry, but it was when I took my sister's clothes to her room, things changed for me.

I had just hung-up my sister's play dresses when I saw the party dress and my sister's Confirmation dress she had worn to church.   I don't know why, but I knew I had to wear both of those dresses.  After putting away all the other clothes I went back to my sister's room.  As I sat there on her bed, I looked towards her closet.   It was like they (the dresses) were calling to me, saying I too could become a pretty girl.  I got undressed right there in her room.  Soon I was rifling through her dresser for panties.  I found a pair of white rhumba panties and put them on; then I took the party dress out of the closet.  I found hanging with it was a petti-slip and the dress had a petticoat attached to it.   Once again the feeling of having to put it on overwhelmed me.   It didn't take long before I had the dress and slip on.  I loved it. The dress was very pretty; it was a white, with a Peter Pan collar.  The hem was trimmed in a blue lace ruffle and there were faux pearl buttons on the bodice.  Since I had already worn dresses I had no problem fastening the buttons in the back of the dress - they were a translucent white.  I put on a pair of lacy anklet socks, but had to wear my penny-loafer shoes as my sister's shoes were to small for me.  After dressing, I went to my mom's room where she had a full length mirror attached to her closet door.  I loved how I looked, more like a girl going to wedding then a party.   My somewhat longish hair only added to the effect.  I decided I'd stay dressed this way the rest of the day.

I went downstairs and, after putting on a apron (to keep MY dress clean), I made my lunch.  As I was sitting there eating I never heard Ann come through the side door. Imagine her surprise finding me (a boy) dressed so femininely.   The thing is she didn't say anything to me, just that I looked very pretty.   I had not known my mom had told her  I sometimes dressed as a girl.  We sat there and talked.  Then she said she had only come by to ask if I would babysit her infant son, to which I agreed.  Then she said that I had to dress as a girl though.  For some reason I also agreed to do just that.    I spent the entire week dressed as a girl; Ann even put make-up on me.  After Mom came back home, I returned to being a boy, but still babysat dressed as a girl.
