Joe A.:
"Good news. If you check out 'ballroom dancing' videos on
YouTube you will see that there is a great
improvement in the style of the ladies'
dresses. They seem to be, at last, returning to the wearing of petticoats. While no match for those fabulous dresses that we enjoyed till the early '80s, the styles are still long, but much fuller, and clearly using a lot a net instead of feathers!. There is hope!" |

Denise: "Here is a sound clip from
a radio broadcast of 'Womans' Hour,' a radio show in Britain
that has been going for at least 50 years; several years
ago they had this item about petticoats. About six minutes
into the clip they get to a discussion of the 50's. One of
the participants describes how
as a young girl, she would 'go to C and A, and drool over
the petticoats - they were all very, very pretty,
bound with ribbon and lace.'
She also describes a date she had when she was
thirteen: As she stepped off the bus to meet her boyfriend,
the elastic on her cancan petticoat snapped, and she stood
there 'with yards of frilly net petticoat trailing around
her ankles.' She doesn't remember if he
went out with
her again,
but I think we would all LOVED to have been him!"
